Is there a secret that no one tells you about that can lead you to success in your online business?
Actually, there is.
But before I get to that, tell me, how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
How Many Licks Does It Take To Get To The Center Of A Tootsie Pop?
This is the question posed in the famous Tootsie Pop commercial which debuted in 1969.
If you recall, a boy asks an owl (after asking several other animals who do not know the answer) how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. The owl takes two licks before biting into the candy, much to the boy's chagrin. A subsequent narrator's voiceover informs us that, "the world may never know."
But is it true the world may never know? Is the number of licks really an unknowable piece of information?
Of course not. It would just take a ton of time, effort, and perhaps some pain (maybe your tongue would get sore?) to discover the answer.
Or maybe some fancy math, like apparently the Journal of Fluid Mechanics did, and determined that it takes approximately 2,500 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.
Well actually, not really when you think about it. It would only take you a little under 42 minutes to get to the center if you licked at a rate of once per second.
Sure that is a lot of time to be licking a candy, but hey, it's doable (I dare you post a video of yourself licking a Tootsie Pop for 42 minutes straight in the comments).
But what does this have to do with guaranteeing business success?
Why People Fail
People who fail to have success in business are a lot like that owl.
They try something, they fail, and then they give up.
Those who don't achieve are too preoccupied with the obstacles, what they didn't achieve, how far they have to go, or their lack of natural ability. They look at these things and they give up, concluding it's not possible for them, or that it's too hard.
But achieving success takes time. It's a marathon, not a sprint...like licking to the center of a Tootsie Pop...
What Successful People Focus On
Successful people, on the other hand, they don't focus on the obstacles. They don't care about what they don't have. They don't worry about their failures.
Successful people focus instead on making progress, continual progress. Every day progress.
Thomas Edison didn't focus on how much farther he had to go to invent the light bulb, he looked at his progress. He looked at how many ways he had discovered how NOT to make a light bulb.
Instead of looking at your "failure" as failure, instead say, "I just discovered how NOT to achieve my desired outcome," which then puts you one step closer to finding the correct solution.
But if you keep progressing in the right direction, it's pretty much inevitable that you will reach your destination. It's no long a matter of "if" but "when".
A great man once said that,
"Consistency is the hallmark of greatness."
This is what you have to strive for as well.
How to Absolutely Guarantee Business Success
However, will power is not enough to guarantee business success. You can't will yourself to make progress. I don't care how strong your will power is, will power is inherently weak.
Instead, you have utilize something else, something that makes consistency, easy.
What is this secret weapon?
Well home business guru Ray Higdon teaches that this secret is habit.
Habits are what we do without thinking about it.
The American historian Will Durant said that,
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."
If you repeatedly do those things which generate success...then how can you NOT have success? How can you not?
What if you had a certain set of habits that coerced you to do those things that guarantee business success, every day.
What if, day after day, you continually did the activities that generated success?
Well the answer is you would succeed! How could you NOT succeed?
If you keep licking the Tootsie Pop, eventually you're going to get to the center.
However, what is NOT going to work is licking it once, and then dipping it in water and putting it in the freezer for a day. You have to make consistent progress.
You're also not going to get to the center if you are daily, say, unwrapping new Tootsie Pops. Consistency is not enough, but you have to consistently do the right things, and make progress in the right direction.
Many times, we know what we need to do, but we don't do them. They're hard things. They're uncomfortable things. So, instead, we procrastinate, and we don't make progress.
You need to get your habits to work for you, instead of against you.
You also need to determine what are the correct habits that you need to cultivate to achieve success in your particular niche.
For example, some examples of habits that network marketers might want to cultivate would be:
- Get 20 "No's" a day
- Create valuable content every day (video/blog post)
- Read 2-3 books in my niche a month
- Attend every company event
